Thank you all for your comments yesterday on my post about mixing metal finishes! It’s always nice when a topic I think is interesting actually IS interesting to you guys. I heard from many of you asking about how to mix finishes in a bathroom and if my same “finishes by horizontal planes” rule applies. I think it’s a bit different in a bathroom so I thought I’d show you a few images that do it well and where to mix if this is a style you like for your own home.
First let’s look at a couple of bathrooms where all the finishes are the same. I love a clean, simple bathroom. I think it translates so nicely into a soothing, spa-like space. Here’s two great examples of a rooms done totally in polished nickel. These makes a pretty strong case for keeping it all one finish right?
The effect is really different when you use a warmer metal like brass. Clearly this room is more ornate that the ones above, partly because the gold tones make it so but mostly because of the style of mirror and sconce.
Here’s another bathroom, done in all brass that is decidedly less ornate, though stunning nonetheless. The cool tones in the gray vanity and that killer floor tile do a lot to tone down the warmth of this finish I think.
Now let’s look at some bathrooms that employ a mix of metal finishes for a more collected look to the room. Like in a kitchen, your options for mixing in the bathroom fall into a few categories I think – ceiling lighting, sconces, faucets and vanity hardware. The bathroom has the added “wildcards” of the shower and tub hardware and, maybe, a framed mirror for the vanity.
So my first rule is, even if you’re mixing metals, I think the faucet finishes throughout the room should be the same. I think it looks odd, even to my collected, eclectic loving mind, to have faucets that are different finishes in the same room. Same function = same finish. That’s my philosophy in the bathroom at least. So if you’re doing polished nickel or chrome sink faucets, that means a polished nickel or chrome tub filler/faucet.
Hope this has given you the confidence and/or ammunition you need to proceed with all your mixed metal dreams!
