I am thrilled to share that one of my string art pieces, commissioned by Make it Yourself Magazine is featured in the latest issue!
Never in a million years did I think the piece I made for Knox’s nursery and posted about here would land me in a national magazine! But through the power of social media, this project has been pinned on Pinterest over 750,000 times since I published the tutorial in February, 2012! An editor from Better Homes and Gardens contacted me last summer about making a piece for their special publication issue, Make it Yourself. We discussed size and I presented a few font options for the word they wanted – make.
They selected option 3 and I set about making the piece, using a similar technique but a different base material than I did for my original which used cork. I was afraid the cork wouldn’t hold up well in shipping so I opted for plywood. There’s a complete instruction list in the magazine but here are a few “in progress” shots for you.
As for the original DREAM piece that started it all, it’s been sitting in a closet since we moved almost 2 years ago! I decided to use it in Knox’s big boy room but I wanted to frame it somehow – preferably inexpensively and keeping it lightweight. A shadowbox would have been great but a custom shadowbox this big would have been $$$$ and super heavy. I ended up using a canvas floater frame from PictureFrames.com and it worked great. I choose the narrowest profile they had in white to really minimize the frame and let the piece shine and I love how it turned out. I glued it right into the frame since my piece is cork and screwing it in (as you do for a canvas) wasn’t an option. Now it looks like a proper art piece and I love it all over again!
The room is almost done. Curtains are up, wallpaper is up, bedding and furniture are done. I just need to get my act together to hang some art and photograph it and I’ll post it all here. But so far, I love it and so does Knox. I’ve posted lots of sneak peaks over on Instagram if you’re interested (#knoxsbigboyroom)
