Back in October, I petitioned you all for help with what to do with the fireplace wall of my family room (here). At the time the wall looked like this and I was debating built-ins, mirrors over consoles and photo ledges. You all overwhelmingly voted for mirrors to open up the space and I was in total agreement.
My problem with this was that I really also wanted additional seating in the room. In an ideal world where I have 6 more feet of width, I’d do this. Mirrors over consoles flanking the fireplace with 2 arm chairs turned toward the couch for a cozy conversation area. Yes our TV is over the fireplace and most of the time we’re in this room, we’re watching it. But I like the idea of having some non-tv facing seating for adult conversation sans tv.
So I was kind of stuck. Consoles and mirrors were just decorative and I needed more. Enter random late night Craig’s List searching. So dangerous. This time my efforts turned up two Mitchell Gold Marlena chairs in perfect condition, 30 minutes from my house for 1/3 the cost of buying them new. I was in my car the very next morning. Here I am all packed up and praying they’d make the trip in one piece.
They did! My little monkeys wasted no time testing them out which really had me freaking out. White linen chairs in a family room with 2 boys under 4…not exactly my first choice. But for the price, I can deal with it for a few years. They are sooooo comfortable and I love how the silhouette is not a slipper chair but also not an arm chair. If/when they get trashed, I’ll have them reupholstered in something more durable. Amazingly, I’ve had these since February and they’ve held up great. Any little stains have cleaned right up with a little damp cloth and some Spray n Wash. Fingers crossed!
Here they are today.
I debated mirrors vs. art and ultimately went with art just because I love these Allyson Reynold’s moth pieces and wanted an excuse to use them. I think they look best in pairs so this is a good set up. You know me…I might still get mirrors and move these over the couch if I get sick of the gallery wall. But I like that they add more color to the room. Big art is almost always the answer!
I kinda want to recover those lumbar pillows in a fun print to add a bit more color to the chairs. What do you think? It would have to be the right fabric. Too many geometrics already in the room with the rug and that basket and ottoman. Speaking of the basket, I still need to address the whole fireplace situation. That basket is from Marshall’s and holds Reed’s baby toys but he’s quickly losing interest in those so that’s probably on it’s way out. I think I’ll revisit this post and see about staking some wood in there for some added texture.
For now, I will deem this done and a success. Thank you Craig’s List!
